H&M Hires Its First Hijab-Wearing Model

Swedish brand H&M has cast hijab-wearing model Mariah Idrissi in their latest campaign.

London native Mariah Idrissi, 23, can now add one very impressive detail to her modelling resume: the first ever hijab-wearing model for fashion brand H&M.
Mariah was discovered by the brand after her casting-director friend Coralie scouted her.
In her day job, Mariah runs Salon Marrakesh, a Moroccan-inspired beauty salon offering henna tattoos, treatments, as well as Halal nail polish manicures.
On landing the role, Mariah told BuzzFeed Life, the campaign "means a lot". "H&M is such a huge retailer, and to finally have someone Muslim in hijab representing the brand is amazing to show."
“I think it’s important to use women in hijab because Islam is the second largest religion in the world," Mariah added.

Mariah has only great things to say about the brand, telling Fusion the lengths H&M went to, to make the model feel at home:
“[H&M] asked how much in terms of neck I could show, but to be honest they were very respectful,” she said. “If the cameramen noticed something not quite right, they would call a woman over to fix me. One of the watches was dangling in the wrong way, and rather than just twisting it on my wrist, the cameraman asked a woman to come over. It just showed that little bit of respect.”
Mariah is also featured in H&M's 'Close the Loop' video, a campaign aimed at encouraging people to recycle their clothes. The video features an amputee model, plus-size models, as well as Sikh men.
