I had a great time at New York Fashion Week. I somehow didn’t trip in front of legions of paparazzis there to catch a glimpse of some Kardashian/West/Jenners, got to meet amazing stylists and artists, see some beautiful clothing, meet friends new and old, and basically immerse myself in all the hair and beauty action.
September not only sees the return of parades of stilettos and the camera lenses that follow them, but the flood of new beauty products coming to marketl. Here’s six of the newest of the new being used to adorn the amazing array of styles presented this Fashion Week.
The most prominent style I saw this season was sleek everything. The most important step in achieving sleek hair is prep, and at Lela Rose, curls were smooth, groomed, and most importantly, shiny. Since lawd only knows what was used in the model’s hair prior, Alterna brought in their new large-sizeCaviar Replenishing Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner to get a consistent and clean canvas to work on.
Funky, weird and especially styled looks are okay to start on hair off the street, but the most polished looks come from a wet to dry finish with high-quality product. I have gotten one of the better blowouts of my life with Alterna products, so I can see why such perfect looks come out that much better with a head start.
Prep has been taking on a whole new meaning with Oribe Run Through Detangling Primer. It was used at multiple shows including Chromat, Badgley Mischka, and Wes Gordon.
This is a stylist’s dream come true when time is of the essence. Not only are you expected to make hair magic for designers, you have to respect the health and integrity of the model’s hair while going as fast as humanly possible. A few mists of this detangler and it’s like night and day! I love my Royal Blowout Spray, but when I’m not blowing out my hair I don’t want to waste its precious oils. Using Run Through on any hair helps combs and brushes slip through with ease, and Oribe’s baller oil and extract portfolio makes hair behave like a beagle waiting for treats.
This is not cheap, but it really works and has that gorgeous figgy Oribe smell that is so popular.
Wet product application should never be limited to serums or detanglers. This is when using memory and anti-humidity products can enter hair and begin to do their job. Kérastase’s Créme de la Créme is vital for volume or control, a true dual-purpose prep product.
Just a dime-size amount in shoulder-length hair helps blowouts keep their shape longer and resist September’s wishy-washy humidity. Deep side parts at Thakoon and sleek c-shaped waves at Jason Wu were cast with the help of this multitasker. Use to build volume in finer hair or to add grip for smoother styling on curly hair—the tube will last a really long time!
The last type of wet-texture product is an opposite-land version of beach spray. Keratin Complex combines the nourishing oils and proteins they typically use in their lines with sugar to form curl instead of salt. Brilliant!
You get the same tousled effect but with less crisp. It has algae extracts and glycerin just like a typical bi-phase salt spray. Designers like Marco Marco and David Tupaz had the power-combo of sleek fronts with textures chignons on the back, all created with no crispy ends thanks to Sweet Definition.
Once hair is thoroughly prepped and dried, you can turn to working products to use hot tools, shape and mold styles, and provide grip and cushion for up styles. Aveda’s Shampure Dry Shampoo launches this November and has the signature scent of walking through an herb garden at dusk.
Unlike most dry shampoos, this non-aerosol blasts texture and absorbs oil but does not leave that usual velcro effect that many dry shampoos cause.

At Tibi, this was generously sprinkled to give root lift to the many languid and chill styles. Cool, calm, collected, just like anyone would be after attacking a greasy head with this sedating scent and powerful sebum stopping magical powers.
I had so much fun at the Betsey Johnson show! The energy was pumping as the teams from Sexy Hair (and Kryolan, for makeup) blasted out gorgeous style after gorgeous style, none possible without copious amounts of working hairspray.
This spray was so crucial to Betsey’s steez at her 50th anniversary that Sexy Hair created a limited edition hairspray just for her!
I die at its floral cuteness, but even more so at the crimping, curling and updos made possible at the show by this spray. Copolymers and fine evaporating silicones add heft to what an iron can typically achieve; it’s like a helping hand for a hot tool, especially crimpers, which take more time to do their job.
It’s been a whirlwind of a week, but seeing Kara and Alle at Tibi, Sable at Nicole Miller, and basically every hair, makeup, PR, photographer, designer, and beauty writer friend in America all in one place watching things unfold was the funnest perk I can imagine.
