Ask CF Question

Dear CF,
I've been going in to work at 6am, and if I want to look half-way living, that means waking up at 4:30am. I am not a morning person at all, and even with make-up, I still look incredibly tired and worn out. Do you have any favorite quick, early morning make-up tips and tricks to help me not look like an 86 year old raccoon?
- Five More Minutes

Our Response

Dear Five More Minutes,
Wow! I can't imagine going into work at 6 A.M., nonetheless waking up at 4:30 A.M. either!
I can definitely see where you are coming from with not wanting to get up earlier than you have to. I don't get up as early as you, but I love to get up, put on my face quickly, and get walking to class as soon as possible.
To help you out, I have done a little bit of research and I am including some of my own personal tips as well. I have also included both drugstore and high-end brands because I know some people love their Cover Girl, and some like their MAC.

First, the most important tip:

The most important tip I can give you doesn't even have to do with makeup itself... it's sleep! I know this may seem like it won't have an effect on your looks, but over time, circles may form under your eyes and your skin will look dried out. Trust me.
Getting enough sleep is crucial to how your day will play out, and how you will feel about yourself that day. If you have to get up early, you'd better be hitting the sheets early, too. Take care of yourself!

Step 1: Conceal, Conceal, Conceal

Smashbox Concealer, Maybelline Concealer

Concealer is the healer in the case of an early morning. But you have to make sure you use it right: When applying your concealer, apply it after your foundation. This helps you use less makeup in the long run because your foundation will actually cover more than you think... and your makeup won't smudge!
Also, applying concealer in the right places can help brighten your face so you look awake: I suggest under your eyes, the corners of your mouth, above and below your eyebrows, the bridge of your nose, and on the center of your chin. It's a subtle take on the strobing trend that will really make your face look alive.

Step 2: Get Polished with Powder

The right powder will keep you looking like airbrushed perfection all day. The key to having a fresh-looking face all day is not to "feather" the powderover the entire face. Instead, press your powder onto the areas where you need it most.
Obviously, don't cake your powder on! However, actually pressing it into trouble areas, then "feathering" it will ensure you don't look drowsy or shiny only 2 hours into your work day. To keep a fresh-looking face, keep a small kabuki brush and your favorite powder in your purse for the occasional touch-up.

Step 3: Bring Out Your Lips

Lipstick can bring so much life to your face! It highlights your lips and it's a fun and quick part of your routine that you can switch up every day. Make sure you purchase a matte finish product to ensure it will look modern and casual for day. Matte finishes also typically last longer, so you won't have to reapply it a lot.
Also, to make it stick even longer, put some foundation on your lips before applying - it will cause the lipstick to "stick" to the foundation more and keep you looking fresh at work!

Step 4: Groom Those Brows

Everyone seems to be into making sure their eyebrows are "on fleek" lately. Eyebrows define your facial features and it take 20 seconds to do them! Bybrushing them with a spoolie and then filling them in, you'll look put-together and ready to take on your day.
